A thrilling new science fiction mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of the Donovan novels
Dr. Timothy Ryan, head of the military psychiatric unit at Grantham Barracks, is meeting a new patient, a woman known as "Prisoner Alpha." As she is being transferred, they are attacked by assassins, barely escaping with their lives. One shooter vanishes, leaving behind a dead companion unlike anyone Ryan has ever seen.
But even more baffling is the puzzle of Alpha herself. She speaks in a strange tongue, and doodles in bars, dots, and little pictures like nothing Ryan has ever seen. Is she some sort of savant, or the most cunning spy he's ever met?
Meanwhile, in Egypt, archaeologist Reid Farmer uncovers an 18th-Dynasty tomb that shouldn't exist, filled with Mayan epigraphy, mathematics, and materials that didn't exist 3,000 years ago. As a result of this discovery, Reid and forensic anthropologist Kilgore France—along with the sarcophagus they have found—are snatched away to a hidden lab to solve the enigma of a man lost in time.
As dark forces gather, Alpha makes an impossible escape from Grantham. Ryan quickly becomes the prime suspect in her disappearance, but with a team of unique allies, sets out to prove his innocence. Together, they must find Alpha and save Ryan before it is too late.

Gear (Unreconciled) examines entanglement theory and time travel in this fast-paced but convoluted sci-fi mystery and series launch. Dr. Timothy Ryan is mesmerized by the mysterious, amnesiac Prisoner Alpha, nicknamed Gray, as soon as Gray arrives at Grantham Barracks, a military psychiatric hospital. He studies Gray for clues as to who she may be, but her behavior is perplexing: she draws odd, abstract sketches and sporadically speaks in a broken, unidentifiable language. Meanwhile in Egypt, archaeologist Reid Farmer unearths a tomb that proves impossible to place in time. Gray reacts violently when she sees news of the discovery on TV, and soon vanishes from her cell. After Ryan is blamed for Gray’s disappearance, his other patients at Grantham set out to prove his innocence by tracking down Gray. As the large cast works to understand the secrets of the tomb and how it connects to Gray, alternate timelines and dimensions encroach on the present timeline, putting it in danger of unraveling. The breakneck pacing and cinematic action sequences are sure to excite, but Gear’s plot-driven narrative makes little time for characterization—the female cast is especially shortchanged—and leans heavily on exposition. Despite some hiccups in execution, fans of military SF and time travel will be entertained. Agent: Matt Bialer, Sanford J. Greenburger Assoc.

The first volume in Gear's new Team Psi series is an action thriller. Colonel Tim Ryan commands Grantham Barracks, which houses military personnel suffering psychiatric problems. One of his patients, Alpha, has exhibited very unusual scientific abilities. Dr. Reid Farmer, an archaeologist, is working on a dig in Egypt, where he has located an ancient tomb with extraordinary anomalies. After seeing a news report about the tomb, Alpha uses an electrical device she put together to escape Grantham Barracks. Col. Ryan puts together a team of his special patients in Ward Six to go look for her. The action picks up from here as it is discovered that Alpha teleported to present-day Earth from a parallel future and she poses a threat to destroy the current Earth time line. Team Psi tracks Alpha down, but they are too late to stop Alpha's next time-travel escape. With a heady mix of corporate skullduggery, military and political machinations, time travel, and parallel universes, Gear's many fans will enjoy this complex tale and look forward to the next installment in the series.
